Heritage Dental offers root canal therapy as part of our restorative dental treatments to patients in the Katy area. For patients suffering from severe tooth pain and sensitivity, a root canal may be needed to alleviate discomfort and save the natural tooth. Don’t let the term “root canal” scare you or cause you to avoid this necessary endodontic treatment. Dr. Nguyen is a skilled dentist who uses the latest techniques to make your root canal procedure comfortable. If you have a tooth that is severely decayed, infected or damaged from trauma, a root canal can save you from worsening pain and help you avoid costly tooth replacement procedures.
Root Canal Therapy
Decay and infection into your tooth center can leave the nerves of your tooth exposed. During root canal therapy, Dr. Nguyen begins by removing the infected or damaged pulp from the center of the tooth. Next, the area is thoroughly disinfected and cleaned before it is sealed off. Lastly, a crown will be placed over the tooth for protection, strength and aesthetics.
Call Heritage Dental if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, which may indicate the need for endodontic treatment or root canal therapy:
- Extreme sensitivity to heat, cold and pressure
- Persistent tooth and gum pain
- A visible cavity that compromises the integrity of the tooth
- A foul taste or odor near the tooth, even after brushing
- Swollen lymph nodes in your neck and jaw near the affected tooth
Is a root canal painful?
Despite common belief, root canals are not painful. In fact, one of the purposes of a root canal is to eliminate tooth pain. Depending on your needs and preferences, you are welcome to add one of our sedation dentistry options, such as laughing gas or oral conscious sedation, to your treatment plan. Dr. Nguyen also uses The Wand, a computer-controlled injection device that guarantees a more comfortable numbing process.
How much does a root canal cost?
The cost of a root canal depends on a couple of variables such as which tooth needs the work and what type of anesthesia is used. Heritage Dental will discuss the cost of treatment up front so you know what to expect. We accept numerous insurance plans and offer flexible financing plans through CareCredit. Root canals are discounted for members of our Dental Savers Plan.
What happens after a root canal procedure?
The first thing that happens is you feel happy to be pain-free! Occasionally the repaired tooth can be sealed off with a filling but usually Dr. Nguyen will recommend a dental crown to ensure the integrity of the tooth. Until the tooth is topped with a permanent restoration, avoid chewing on that side. If you experience a little tenderness for a day or two afterwards it can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
